Daniel Mathew Canell

CARTHAGE, N.Y. — Daniel Mathew Canell, 91, a former resident of Carthage, died Monday, July 23, at the Lewis County Residential Health Care Facility under the care of his family and friends. Mr. Canell died of cancer.

Born March 26, 1916, the son of Harry Matthew and Mae Catherine Gilmore Canell, he attended school in Carthage.

He served in the U.S. Army from 1935 to 1938. He also served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from 1942 to 1945 as a seaman second class.

He married Marguerite E. Carpenter on Dec. 31, 1936, in Carthage. She died April 17, 1998.

He was a member of the St. James Church in Carthage. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Surviving are two daughters, Grovene and her husband Neil Mantle, Oswego, and Ina M. LaClair, Central Square; 10 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 7 great great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and his companion and special friend, Betty Ashlaw, Carthage.

A son, Daniel Dean, died Jan. 23, 1938, at the age of 10 months. A daughter, Barbara J Currier, died on May 27, 1992. He is also predeceased by three sisters and two brothers, Lillian Canell Plumadore Hiney, Catherine Canell, and Barbara Canell, Joseph and William Canell.
